About Tom Ritchie
I
love the push and pull of oil paint as the medium spreads out over a canvas or
panel, whether by brush, palette knife or other tool. Weβre making marks here.
A
significant portion of my work is completed en plein air. I want to capture an experience or sensation
of the environment in my work. Iβm
inviting the viewer to join me on this journey to capture the experience or
sensation so that the painting is felt.
These plein air paintings are done alla prima, wet into wet
completed in one session in order to achieve a fresh and harmonious
representation of light. With each new
subject approached βin all weather,β I strive to interpret the effects of
light, air and emotions evoked by the subject.
I
was raised in the Mid-west, where I attended college and university, graduating
with degrees in history and political science.
I started painting as a teenager, but was diverted to a professional
career as a journalist working in television news. I moved to Baltimore 40 years ago to a job
producing local newscasts; I spent the final 20 years of my television news
career at Associated Press Television in Washington, DC. I continued to paint during this time on
weekends and holidays. Ten years ago I
made a commitment to plein air painting and continue to enjoy the journey.
